A defence official has stated that the MoD is currently investigating the potential threats associated with Chinese cars, while staff have been instructed to refrain from talking about classified matters in all cars.
Security Advice for MoD Staff
In a recent interview on a radio station, Luke Pollard addressed claims that Ministry of Defence staff have been told not to discuss classified information while travelling in Chinese vehicles.
He said that the MoD is “examining” Chinese vehicles within its fleets, but noted that security is a issue in every modern vehicles.
We have a collection of tens of thousands of cars in the Ministry of Defence and Chinese ones represent a tiny fraction.
However regardless of if you’re driving a vehicle from China or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our people is not to plug Ministry of Defence technology into their car, not to have discussions at a classified classification in any car, because of the increasing threats of eavesdropping that are present in every single vehicle, to only have those confidential conversations in secure locations. This is a prudent and reasonable thing for anyone concerned about security.
After it was put to him that it would be wise for the MoD to stop using every Chinese vehicles, Pollard replied: That is precisely what we’re investigating at the moment.”
Broader Security Background
This revelation follows claims from Scandinavian countries have alerted the UK to the existence of multi-purpose kill switches in Chinese-made electric buses, which could enable the Chinese government to disable buses and cause disruption to transport systems.
Furthermore, a Russia intelligence vessel has been shining laser beams at RAF aircrew, described as a “highly dangerous” action by government representatives.
This broader security situation underscores the importance of robust protocols and vigilance in all areas of official activities, from vehicle use to discussions practices.
