Seven alleged individuals of Germany's far-left group stand trial over multiple attacks

A group of seven people accused of being the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost went on trial on this week, accused for violent actions against rightwing extremists that earned them the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

International terrorist designation and legal charges

Earlier this month, the US government classified the organization as a terrorist group along with multiple additional left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.

Authorities in Germany state the group was behind targeting locations in the country and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose venue reportedly served as a meeting point for far-right supporters.

Some suspects are allegedly accused of using hammers against suspected far-right members, causing several severely injured.

Court proceedings and cross-border allegations

Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the city of Dresden, Germany. Two defendants, identified as Johann G and Paul M, are additionally accused for violent incidents in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, around an annual event called the “day of honor” that attracts rightwing extremists from throughout the continent.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T, is currently on trial in the Hungarian judicial system for multiple charges of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis in the lead-up to the same rally in 2023.

Regional context and organizational structure

The former East Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigrant youth organizations, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that counter them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G as a senior figure within the organization, tasked with organizing violent acts and recruiting accomplices.

Alongside Paul M., he is accused of organizing training sessions where leftwing extremists practised combat techniques and simulated violent actions. At depots overseen by the suspect, the group reportedly stockpiled tools, irritant sprays, disguises and communication devices.

Prior legal cases and global responses

A different activist formerly involved with the group, Lina E, emerged as a symbolic figure within some far-left activist circles following her conviction in 2023 for attacks on presumed far-right targets.

The US designation makes group members ineligible to enter the United States, freezes any assets they may have within the American economy and makes it illegal offering assistance to them.

The German right-wing AfD party applauded the American move and called on the German administration to follow suit. However, the German foreign ministry simply stated it had “taken note” of the American classification.

“The threat from the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have either received convictions or are in custody.”
